Teeth Whitening
Everyone can appreciate a smile that is white and bright. If yours isn’t as white as you’d like it to be, you might want to consider teeth whitening, which is one of the least expensive ways to make the most difference in your smile.
Almost everybody could be considered a candidate for teeth whitening. At Paddington Dentistry, we provide a full range of teeth whitening to meet all clinical needs and whitening goals.
Why Teeth Become Stained
Stains occur for many reasons, including drinking coffee, tea or red wine; eating foods such as berries or curries; and smoking or tobacco use. The ageing process also means that your teeth can take on a yellowed look.
Types of Teeth Whitening Treatments Available
There are many whitening treatments available for purchase at the local chemist. But because they are intended to be one-size-fits-all kits, this means they come with trays that don’t fit over the teeth properly. The whitening gel may leak out of these ill-fitting trays, causing gum irritation and tooth sensitivity.
Professional whitening teeth whitening offers better, more consistent results. The whitening service provided by our Paddington, NSW dental clinic consists of two different types of treatments: (1) in-chair whitening at our office and (2) a customised at-home kit and care plan.
In-Chair Teeth Whitening at Our Dental Clinic
Philips Zoom! is our in-office solution for teeth whitening. The entire process takes just over an hour from start to finish and is ideal for anyone who would like to whiten their teeth in a short amount of time.
The procedure entails application of a special whitening serum applied to your teeth, which is activated by a blue (LED) light. This serum is left on your teeth for 15 minutes before it is removed and another layer placed on the teeth, which is then re-activated. This procedure is repeated three or four times. Although results will vary depending on the individual, you can expect to have your teeth whiter by two or three shades by this system, which gives a magnificent result.
At-Home Whitening
If you are not in a hurry to have your teeth whitened, or you just don’t want to spend an hour in our dental clinic, you might choose our at-home whitening system. It requires a short 15-minute appointment to get started, during which time we will take moulds of your teeth so we can create customised trays just for you.
Over two weeks of wearing the trays each day, your smile will be one to two shades whiter. At-home whitening is also a great way to touch up your smile following in-chair whitening treatment. We also provide tips on how to keep your teeth white with your day to day routine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Teeth whitening is not permanent, and the length of time it lasts can depend on your lifestyle habits as well as the ageing process.
Taking in foods and drinks that cause staining can reduce the whiteness and brightness of the teeth quickly. After you have had your teeth professionally whitened, it’s best to avoid the following:
- Coffee, tea and red wine
- Curries, berries and red vegetables such as peppers
It’s best to avoid these types of foods and beverages to prolong the effect of whitening for a year or so. That isn’t always realistic, however. Some people use a straw to drink teeth-staining beverages, and this might be an option to consider. You can also rinse your mouth with water after consuming anything that might cause staining.
If you smoke cigarettes or use tobacco products, these can also stain the teeth, even after whitening. The ageing process also causes teeth to take on a yellowed tinge.
